David Weprin Urges Support for Jamaica High School
(2010-01-13)

Thank you for this opportunity to speak on the need to preserve Jamaica High School. ANY (and I emphasize the “ANY”) plan to re-organize a school in any community must engage the community in formulating the change. The centrally conceived, top down dictate to essentially dispose of what those most involved in the school find as a working high school that delivers sound education, appears ill-conceived and ill serves our community. The Department of Education needs to reverse course, re-engage the community, forge a consensus on what the community, especially our kids needs, and support that model.

As a graduate of Jamaica High School, a beautiful, landmarked place, I recognize how a school can make a difference in what a student achieves later as they move forward. The school community must be consulted and engaged from the outset. I urge the Community Board to pass a resolution that insisting that the school community must be consulted and engaged from the outset.
